Manuel Gomes da Costa

Manuel Gomes da Costa, born on January fourteenth, eighteen sixty-three, was a prominent figure in Portuguese history, known for his multifaceted roles as a politician, military officer, and revolutionary. His military career spanned over two decades, during which he served in various Portuguese colonies, including India, Mozambique, Angola, and São Tomé, under the command of the esteemed Mouzinho de Albuquerque.

After the tumultuous events of World War I, Gomes da Costa emerged as a significant military leader, commanding the 1st Division of the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps. His military success propelled him into the political arena, where he became a vocal opponent of the prevailing Democratic Party, advocating for a shift towards a more conservative governance.

In nineteen twenty-six, Gomes da Costa played a pivotal role in the military coup on May twenty-eighth, which marked the beginning of the Ditadura Nacional, a conservative and authoritarian regime in Portugal. Following the coup, he deposed the moderate José Mendes Cabeçadas, briefly assuming the roles of head of government and state during the summer of that year.

However, his tenure was short-lived, as he was soon ousted by another coup, leading to the rise of Óscar Carmona. Despite the brevity of his presidency, Gomes da Costa's impact on Portuguese politics and military history remains significant.
