Manuel Zelaya, born on September twentieth, nineteen fifty-two, is a prominent Honduran politician who served as the thirty-fifth president of Honduras from two thousand six until his forcible removal during the coup d'état in two thousand nine. He is also recognized as the inaugural first gentleman of Honduras, a title he has held since two thousand twenty-two.
As the eldest son of a wealthy businessman, Zelaya inherited the nickname 'Mel' and was initially involved in his family's logging and timber enterprises before venturing into politics. Initially elected as a liberal, he shifted towards the political left during his presidency, forming a significant alliance with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas, known as ALBA.
The political landscape changed dramatically on June twenty-eighth, two thousand nine, when Zelaya was seized by the military amid the Honduran constitutional crisis and sent into exile in Costa Rica. He made a clandestine return to Honduras on September twenty-first, two thousand nine, resurfacing in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. Following this, he spent over a year in exile in the Dominican Republic.
In addition to his political endeavors, Zelaya has been married to Xiomara Castro since January nineteen seventy-six. Castro, who was elected as the president of Honduras in the two thousand twenty-one general election, made history by becoming the first female president of the country. Upon her inauguration, Zelaya took on the role of the first gentleman, marking a new chapter in Honduran history.
