Maputo

Maputo, the capital and largest city of Mozambique, is a vibrant port city located near the southern end of the country, just one hundred and twenty kilometers from the borders with Eswatini and South Africa. With a population of over one million residents as of two thousand seventeen, Maputo is characterized by its eclectic architecture and rich cultural scene. The city is situated on a large natural bay along the Indian Ocean, where several rivers converge, and is divided into seven administrative divisions, each containing various neighborhoods.

Originally settled as a fishing village by the Tsonga people, the area was named Lourenço Marques after the navigator who explored it in fifteen forty-four. The modern city began to take shape with the establishment of a Portuguese fort in seventeen eighty-one, leading to its elevation to city status in eighteen seventy-seven. Following the relocation of the capital of Portuguese Mozambique to this city in eighteen ninety-eight, it experienced significant growth as a port city during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

After gaining independence in nineteen seventy-five, the city was renamed Maputo and became the national capital. However, the Mozambican Civil War severely impacted its economy. In the aftermath, the FRELIMO government initiated a program to revitalize the city, focusing on economic recovery and urban cleanup. Today, Maputo is known for its wide avenues lined with jacaranda and acacia trees, earning it the nicknames City of Acacias and the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.

Maputo boasts numerous landmarks, including Independence Square, City Hall, and the historic Baixa de Maputo district. The city is also home to several educational institutions, such as Eduardo Mondlane University, the oldest in the country. Its economy is primarily driven by its port, facilitating the export of goods like cotton, sugar, and hardwood, alongside a robust manufacturing and service sector.
