Marc Ravalomanana, born on December twelfth, nineteen forty-nine, is a prominent Malagasy politician and entrepreneur who served as the sixth president of Madagascar from two thousand two to two thousand nine. Hailing from a farming Merina family in Imerinkasinina, near Antananarivo, he initially gained recognition as the founder and CEO of the expansive dairy conglomerate TIKO, later establishing the successful wholesaler MAGRO and several other enterprises.
Ravalomanana entered the political arena in nineteen ninety-nine by founding the Tiako Iarivo party, successfully winning the mayoral election in Antananarivo, where he served from nineteen ninety-nine to two thousand one. His tenure was marked by significant improvements in the city's sanitary and security conditions. In August two thousand one, he announced his candidacy for the presidency as an independent, ultimately taking office in two thousand two amidst a contentious election dispute.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Jacques Sylla, Ravalomanana's administration saw the founding of the Tiako I Madagasikara party in two thousand two, which dominated subsequent legislative and local elections. His presidency was characterized by notable economic growth, averaging seven percent annually, and advancements in education and healthcare infrastructure. However, his later years in office faced criticism for increasing authoritarianism and growing wealth inequality, culminating in a popular uprising in early two thousand nine that forced his resignation.
Following his resignation, Ravalomanana lived in exile in South Africa from two thousand nine to two thousand twelve, engaging in negotiations to organize national elections. He declared in December two thousand twelve that he would not run as a candidate, a decision aimed at ensuring the legitimacy of the electoral process. After a tumultuous return attempt in October two thousand fourteen, he was arrested and sentenced in absentia for abuses of power. His sentence was lifted in May two thousand fifteen, allowing him to resume his business activities and re-establish his political presence.
