She made her mark in the music industry by co-writing the iconic Eric Clapton hit 'Lay Down Sally' in nineteen seventy-seven, showcasing her exceptional songwriting skills. Her debut studio album, simply titled 'Marcella', was released in nineteen eighty-two, marking the beginning of her solo career.

In nineteen eighty-eight, Detroit joined the British band Shakespears Sister, alongside former Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey. The duo quickly gained popularity, with their first two studio albums, 'Sacred Heart' in nineteen eighty-nine and 'Hormonally Yours' in nineteen ninety-two, both achieving top ten status on the UK Albums Chart. Detroit's powerful vocals were featured prominently on their biggest hit, 'Stay', which dominated the UK Singles Chart for eight consecutive weeks in nineteen ninety-two.

After departing from Shakespears Sister in nineteen ninety-three, Detroit continued to pursue her solo career, achieving a UK top twenty hit with 'I Believe' in nineteen ninety-four.
