Marcellin Berthelot

Marcellin Berthelot, born on October twenty-fifth, eighteen twenty-seven, was a distinguished French chemist and a prominent Republican politician. He is best known for the Thomsen–Berthelot principle of thermochemistry, which significantly advanced the field. Berthelot's groundbreaking work in synthesizing organic compounds from inorganic substances provided substantial counter-evidence to the prevailing theory of Jöns Jakob Berzelius, which posited that organic compounds could only be produced by living organisms.

With a visionary outlook, Berthelot believed that chemical synthesis would transform the food industry by the year two thousand, predicting that synthesized foods would eventually replace traditional farming. He provocatively questioned, 'Why not,' if it proved cheaper and better to manufacture these materials rather than cultivate them?

Regarded as one of the most renowned chemists globally, Berthelot's reputation soared when he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs for the French government in eighteen ninety-five, a position that underscored his status as 'the most eminent living chemist' in France. His contributions to science and society were recognized when he was elected as one of the 'Forty Immortals' of the Académie française in nineteen oh one.
