Marcelo Caetano, born on August seventeenth, nineteen oh six, was a prominent Portuguese politician and scholar who played a significant role in the country's political landscape. He succeeded António de Oliveira Salazar as the second and last leader of the Estado Novo, a corporatist authoritarian regime that governed Portugal for several decades.
Caetano served as the President of the Council of Ministers from nineteen sixty-eight until nineteen seventy-four. His tenure was marked by attempts to modernize the regime and address the growing discontent among the Portuguese populace. Despite his efforts, he faced increasing opposition, culminating in the Carnation Revolution, which ultimately led to his overthrow.
