Marcelo Ebrard, born on October tenth, nineteen fifty-nine, is a prominent Mexican politician and internationalist. He has held the position of secretary of economy since October first, twenty twenty-four. A member of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Ebrard previously served as secretary of foreign affairs under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from twenty eighteen to twenty twenty-three.
Before his tenure in foreign affairs, Ebrard was the Head of Government of the Federal District, now known as Mexico City, from two thousand six to two thousand twelve. He won the Federal District election in two thousand six as part of a Democratic Revolution Party (PRD)-led electoral alliance. During his time as mayor, he was instrumental in launching the Ecobici mobility system, the Prepa Sí program that provides scholarships to low-income students, and various revitalization projects in the historic center of the city.
Ebrard's leadership earned him international recognition, including a nomination as the 'world's best mayor' by the Project World Mayor in two thousand ten. After leaving office, he took on the role of president of the United Nations Global Network on Safer Cities and chaired the World Mayors Council on Climate Change from two thousand nine to two thousand twelve.
As a potential presidential candidate, Ebrard ran for the PRD's nomination in two thousand twelve but lost to López Obrador. In June twenty twenty-three, he resigned from his position as secretary of foreign affairs to pursue the presidency in the twenty twenty-four election, though he ultimately lost Morena's nomination to Claudia Sheinbaum. Following this, on June twentieth, twenty twenty-four, President-elect Sheinbaum appointed Ebrard as secretary of economy, a role he officially began on October first, twenty twenty-four.
