Marcia McNutt

Marcia McNutt, born on February nineteenth, nineteen fifty-two, is a distinguished American geophysicist and oceanographer, currently serving as the twenty-second president of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in the United States. Her remarkable career is marked by groundbreaking achievements in the field of earth sciences.

Before her tenure at NAS, McNutt made history as the first woman to lead the United States Geological Survey (USGS), where she served as the fifteenth director. Additionally, she held the position of science adviser to the United States Secretary of the Interior from two thousand ten to two thousand thirteen, showcasing her influence in governmental scientific policy.

Her academic contributions are equally impressive, having been a professor of marine geophysics at Stanford University's School of Earth Sciences, as well as at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. McNutt also led the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) as president and chief executive officer, further solidifying her status as a leader in oceanographic research.

From two thousand thirteen to two thousand sixteen, she served as editor-in-chief of the prestigious journal Science. Currently, she holds a visiting appointment at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and is an active member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine advisory committee for the Division on Earth and Life Studies and the Forum on Open Science. Notably, she chaired the NASEM climate intervention committee, which produced two significant reports in two thousand fifteen.
