Marcos Pontes

Marcos Pontes, born on March eleventh, nineteen sixty-three, is a distinguished Brazilian Air Force pilot, engineer, and astronaut. He made history as the first South American and the first Lusophone to venture into space, successfully docking with the International Space Station aboard Soyuz TMA-8 on March thirtieth, two thousand six. His journey into the cosmos marked a significant milestone for Brazil and the broader Lusophone community.

In addition to his remarkable achievements in space, Pontes is the only Brazilian to have completed the rigorous NASA astronaut training program. However, due to challenges faced by NASA's Space Shuttle program, he transitioned to training in Russia, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to his aspirations.

Beyond his contributions to aerospace, Pontes has also made his mark in politics.
