Margaret Abbott

Margaret Abbott was an American amateur golfer born in Calcutta, British Raj, in 1878. At the age of six, she moved with her family to Chicago, where she would later join the prestigious Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois. Under the guidance of renowned coaches Charles B. Macdonald and H. J. Whigham, Abbott honed her skills on the golf course.

In 1899, Abbott traveled to Paris with her mother to pursue her passion for art. The following year, unaware that they were entering the second modern Olympics, both women signed up for a women's golf tournament. Abbott's remarkable performance earned her the title, as she finished with a score of forty-seven strokes, while her mother secured a tie for seventh place. As a reward for her victory, Abbott received a beautiful porcelain bowl.

In December 1902, Margaret Abbott married the writer Finley Peter Dunne, and the couple eventually settled in New York, where they raised four children. Despite her groundbreaking achievement as the first American woman to win an Olympic event, Abbott remained largely unrecognized during her lifetime. She passed away in 1955 at the age of seventy-six, never fully aware of her historic accomplishment.

It wasn't until the research of Paula Welch, a professor at the University of Florida, that Abbott's story gained the attention it deserved. In 2018, The New York Times published her belated obituary, finally acknowledging her significant contribution to the world of sports.
