Margaret Chan

Margaret Chan, born on August twenty-second, nineteen forty-seven, is a distinguished Chinese-Canadian physician and politician. She is best known for her tenure as the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) from two thousand six to two thousand seventeen, where she represented the People's Republic of China. Her career in public health began in Hong Kong, where she served as the Director of Health from nineteen ninety-four to two thousand three.

Before her appointment as Director-General, Chan held significant roles within the WHO, including serving as the Assistant Director-General for Communicable Diseases and as the representative for Pandemic Influenza from two thousand three to two thousand six. Her leadership during critical health crises, such as the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in nineteen ninety-seven and the SARS outbreak in two thousand three, drew both attention and criticism.

In two thousand fourteen, Chan was recognized by Forbes as the thirtieth most powerful woman in the world, highlighting her influence in global health policy.
