Margaret MacDonald (nurse)

Margaret MacDonald, born on February twenty-sixth, eighteen seventy-three, in Bailey Brook, Nova Scotia, emerged from a privileged Catholic family. Her father, a store owner, ensured that she received an education, a rare opportunity for girls during that era. This foundation set the stage for her remarkable career in nursing.

MacDonald's nursing journey began in Panama, where she honed her skills before stepping into the military realm. Her first significant role came during the Spanish-American War in eighteen ninety-eight, where she served aboard the USS Relief, marking the beginning of her dedication to military nursing.

Throughout her career, MacDonald made history as a Canadian military nurse, serving valiantly in both the Second Boer War and the First World War. She achieved the prestigious title of Matron-in-Chief of the Canadian Army Medical Corps Nursing Service, becoming the first woman in the British Empire to be promoted to the rank of major.
