Margaret Sambiria

Margaret Sambiria, born in the year 1230, holds a significant place in Danish history as a formidable consort and regent. She became Queen of Denmark through her marriage to King Christopher I, a union that would see her rise to prominence in the political landscape of the time.

Her most notable achievement came during the minority of her son, King Eric V, when she served as regent from the year 1259 until 1264. This period marked her as the first woman confirmed to have formally ruled as regent of Denmark, a groundbreaking role that paved the way for future female leaders.

In addition to her regency, Margaret was the reigning fief-holder of Danish Estonia from 1266 to 1282, further solidifying her influence and authority in the region.
