Margaret Woodbridge

Margaret Darling Woodbridge, born on January 6, 1902, was a remarkable American swimmer who made her mark in the world of competitive swimming. Known for her exceptional talent, she was a member of the inaugural U.S. Olympic Women's swimming team and achieved the prestigious honor of winning a gold medal at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics.

Competing for the Detroit Athletic Club, Woodbridge showcased her prowess in the water by dominating the Women's Aquatic Club 4-mile swim in Michigan, finishing with an impressive time of one hour, nine minutes, and thirteen seconds. Her performance was particularly notable as she outpaced her nearest rival, Euphrasia Donnely, by over two minutes, solidifying her status as a leading swimmer of her time.

Under the guidance of Hall of Fame Coach Matthew Mann, Woodbridge set national records in both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events. Her fierce competitiveness provided a significant challenge to the top swimmers from the Women’s Swimming Association of New York, further establishing her legacy in the sport.

Margaret Woodbridge, who later became known as Margaret Presley after her marriage, passed away on February 23, 1995. Her contributions to swimming and her achievements in the early days of women's sports continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
