Margareta of Romania, born on March twenty-six, nineteen forty-nine, is the eldest daughter of King Michael I and Queen Anne of Romania. Following her father's retirement in March two thousand sixteen, she took on his responsibilities and has claimed the headship of the House of Romania since his passing on December fifth, two thousand seventeen. In addition to her royal duties, she leads the Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation, contributing to various charitable initiatives.
Until two thousand eleven, Margareta held the title of princess of Hohenzollern. She is one of five sisters, with no brothers or children of her own. Her heir presumptive is her sister, Princess Elena of Romania, ensuring the continuation of their family's legacy.
Under the royal constitutions of nineteen twenty-three and nineteen thirty-eight, which adhered to agnatic primogeniture, Margareta and her sisters would not have been in the line of succession to the throne. However, on December thirtieth, two thousand seven, King Michael designated her as the heir presumptive to the defunct throne, a decision that remains unrecognized by the Romanian government and lacks legal validity without parliamentary approval.
During the same occasion, King Michael expressed his desire for the restoration of the monarchy to allow for female succession, advocating against the reinstatement of the Salic law of succession. According to the new statute of the Romanian Royal House, as declared by King Michael, any illegitimate descendants or collateral lines are excluded from claiming dynastic privileges, titles, or rank, thereby preserving the integrity of the Royal House of Romania.
