Maria Anna of Neuburg

Maria Anna of Neuburg, born on 28 October 1667, was a prominent German princess and a significant figure in European politics during her time. As a member of the illustrious Wittelsbach family, she ascended to the role of Queen of Spain in 1689, marrying Charles II, the last Habsburg ruler of the Spanish Empire.

Her reign was marked by political turmoil, primarily due to the absence of heirs from her marriage. The power struggle between the French and Austrian factions over the Spanish throne dominated her life. Following the death of Charles II in 1700, the succession of Philip of Anjou, a grandson of Louis XIV of France, ignited the War of the Spanish Succession, which lasted from 1701 to 1714.

Maria Anna staunchly supported the Austrian claim to the throne, which ultimately led to her exile. Following her removal from the court, she lived in relative obscurity until her passing on 16 July 1740. Her life reflects the complexities of royal alliances and the impact of dynastic politics in early modern Europe.
