Maria Bashir

Maria Bashir, born in 1970, is a trailblazing politician and lawyer in Afghanistan, renowned for her unwavering commitment to justice and women's rights. As the only woman to serve as a prosecutor in the country as of 2009, she has navigated the treacherous waters of Afghan civil service for over fifteen years, confronting challenges such as the Taliban, corrupt law enforcement, and numerous threats to her life.

During the Taliban regime, Bashir was barred from her professional duties. Undeterred, she took it upon herself to educate girls in secret, defying the oppressive laws that restricted women's visibility in public. Following the fall of the Taliban, she was reinstated and appointed as the Chief Prosecutor General of Herat Province in two thousand six, where she focused on combating corruption and advocating for the rights of women.

In two thousand ten alone, Bashir managed approximately eighty-seven cases, showcasing her dedication to her role. Her remarkable efforts have not gone unnoticed; she was honored with the International Women of Courage Award by the United States Department of State, recognizing her leadership and bravery in promoting women's rights, often at great personal risk.
