Maria Butina, born on November tenth, nineteen eighty-eight, is a notable Russian politician and political activist. She gained international attention for her involvement in U.S. politics, particularly during the controversial 2016 presidential election. Butina's career began as an entrepreneur, but she later transitioned into political activism, where she sought to promote Russian interests in the United States.
In her role as an assistant to Aleksandr Torshin, a prominent member of the Federation Council and a key figure in Vladimir Putin's United Russia party, Butina aimed to infiltrate conservative organizations in the U.S., including the National Rifle Association. Her efforts were part of a broader strategy to influence the Trump campaign and establish secret communications with Russia, as concluded by the Senate Intelligence Committee.
In July two thousand eighteen, Butina was arrested by the FBI in Washington, D.C., and charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent of the Russian Federation. She pleaded guilty to felony charges in December of the same year, resulting in an eighteen-month prison sentence. After serving approximately five months at the Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institution, she was released and deported back to Russia in October two thousand nineteen.
Despite the serious allegations against her, Butina has publicly denied being a spy. In two thousand twenty-one, she made a significant political comeback by being elected to the State Duma as a member of United Russia, marking a new chapter in her political career.
