Maria Cunitz

Maria Cunitz, born in 1610, was a pioneering Silesian astronomer who made significant contributions to the field during the early modern era. Her work stands out not only for its scientific merit but also for her role as one of the most notable female figures in astronomy of her time.

She is best known for her groundbreaking book, Urania propitia, where she introduced innovative tables and ephemerides. Cunitz also simplified the application of Kepler's second law, providing a more accessible method for determining the positions of planets along their elliptical orbits.

In recognition of her contributions to astronomy, the Cunitz crater on Venus was named in her honor, as well as the minor planet 12624 Mariacunitia. These tributes reflect her lasting impact on the scientific community and her legacy as a trailblazer for women in science.
