Maria Goretti, born on October sixteenth, eighteen ninety, was an Italian virgin martyr and one of the youngest saints canonized by the Catholic Church. Raised in a farming family, her life was marked by hardship from an early age, particularly after the death of her father when she was just nine years old. This loss forced her family to share their home with another family, the Serenellis, and Maria took on the responsibility of household duties while her mother and siblings worked in the fields.
Tragedy struck one afternoon when Alessandro, the twenty-year-old son of the Serenelli family, made unwanted sexual advances towards her. In a courageous act of defiance, Maria refused to submit to his demands. In a fit of rage, Alessandro stabbed her fourteen times. Despite her grave injuries, she was taken to the hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her wounds, all the while forgiving her attacker.
Alessandro was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to prison. During his time behind bars, he experienced a profound change of heart and repented for his actions. After twenty-seven years, he was released and sought forgiveness from Maria's mother, who graciously granted it. Alessandro later dedicated his life to faith, becoming a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery, where he lived until his death in nineteen seventy.
Maria Goretti's legacy endures, as she was beatified in nineteen forty-seven and canonized in nineteen fifty. She is particularly venerated within the Congregation of the Passion, known as the Passionists, and her story continues to inspire many around the world.
