Maria Mitchell

Maria Mitchell, born on August first, eighteen eighteen, was a pioneering American astronomer, librarian, naturalist, and educator. She gained international recognition in eighteen forty-seven when she discovered a comet, designated as 1847 VI and later known as 'Miss Mitchell's Comet.' This remarkable achievement earned her a gold medal prize, which was presented to her by King Christian the Eighth of Denmark in eighteen forty-eight.

In eighteen sixty-five, Mitchell made history by becoming the first woman to hold a position as a professional astronomer and professor of astronomy at Vassar College. Her contributions to the field of astronomy were groundbreaking, and she was the first woman to be elected as a Fellow of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
