Maria of Alania

Maria of Alania, born in the year one thousand fifty, emerged as a pivotal figure in Byzantine history through her marriages to emperors Michael VII Doukas and Nikephoros III Botaneiates. Her ascension to the status of empress marked a significant achievement for the newly unified Kingdom of Georgia, showcasing its growing influence in the region.

During her time, the Kingdom of Georgia began to establish a presence that could rival that of Byzantium, particularly under the reign of her nephew, King David IV. Notably, David IV chose to forgo the title of Byzantine emperor, emphasizing the independence and strength of Georgia during this period.
