Maria of Amnia

Maria of Amnia, born in the year seven hundred seventy, was a prominent figure in Byzantine history, known for her role as the first wife of Emperor Constantine VI. Her lineage was distinguished, tracing back to her mother, Hypatia, and her grandfather, Saint Philaretos, a notable magnate from the Armeniakon Theme, celebrated for his charitable endeavors.

Raised in Amnia, Paphlagonia, Maria's upbringing was steeped in the rich traditions of her family's legacy. The connection to Saint Philaretos, highlighted in his hagiography, underscores the values of philanthropy and service that were likely instilled in her from a young age.
