Maria Reiche

Maria Reiche, born on May fifteenth, nineteen oh three, was a remarkable German-born Peruvian mathematician, archaeologist, and language teacher. Her passion for the ancient world led her to the Nazca Lines, a series of geoglyphs in Peru, which she first encountered in nineteen forty-one alongside American historian Paul Kosok. This pivotal moment ignited her lifelong dedication to the documentation, preservation, and public awareness of these enigmatic figures.

Affectionately known as the 'Lady of the Lines', Reiche became the foremost curator of the Nazca Lines, residing nearby to ensure their protection. Her tireless efforts garnered her significant recognition, including the prestigious title of Doctor Honoris Causa from both the National University of San Marcos and the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Lima. Through her advocacy, she played a crucial role in elevating the Nazca Lines to national and international prominence, culminating in their designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in nineteen ninety-four.

Following her passing, Reiche's legacy continued to thrive as her former residence in Nazca was transformed into the Museo Maria Reiche, celebrating her contributions to archaeology and mathematics. Her influence is further honored through the naming of the Maria Reiche Neuman Airport in Nazca, as well as the Park Maria Reiche in Miraflores, alongside numerous schools and institutions across Peru. In May two thousand eighteen, the one hundred fifteenth anniversary of her birth was celebrated with a Google Doodle, a testament to her enduring impact.
