Marian McPartland

Margaret Marian McPartland OBE, born on March 20, 1918, was a remarkable figure in the world of jazz, known for her talents as a pianist, composer, and writer. Her journey in music began in England, but after marrying trumpeter Jimmy McPartland in February 1945, she made the United States her home, where she would become a prominent voice in jazz.

From 1978 to 2011, Marian captivated audiences as the host of 'Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz' on National Public Radio, a platform that showcased her deep love for jazz and her ability to connect with both musicians and listeners alike. Her contributions to the genre were recognized when she was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2000.

In addition to her radio success, Marian founded Halcyon Records in 1969, a venture that allowed her to produce and release music for a decade. Her versatility as a musician was evident not only in jazz but also in her compositions across various genres, including her symphonic work 'A Portrait of Rachel Carson,' performed with the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra in 2007.

Marian's accolades include a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement in 2004 and induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2010, she was honored as a member of the Order of the British Empire, solidifying her legacy as a pioneering artist who left an indelible mark on the music world.
