Marian Rejewski

Marian Rejewski, born on August sixteenth, nineteen oh five, was a remarkable Polish mathematician and cryptologist. In late nineteen thirty-two, he achieved the extraordinary feat of reconstructing the German military Enigma cipher machine without ever having seen it, thanks to limited documents provided by French military intelligence.

Over the next nearly seven years, Rejewski, alongside fellow mathematicians Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski, worked diligently at the Polish General Staff's Cipher Bureau. They developed innovative techniques and equipment to decrypt the Enigma ciphers, even as the Germans continuously modified their machines and encryption methods. Among Rejewski's significant contributions were the cryptologic card catalog and the cryptologic bomb, which played crucial roles in their decryption efforts.

Just five weeks before the onset of World War II in Europe, the Polish cryptologists shared their groundbreaking achievements with their French and British counterparts, who had struggled to make progress. This collaboration enabled Britain to begin deciphering German Enigma communications, which became a vital part of the intelligence operation known as Ultra, significantly aiding in the defeat of Nazi Germany.
