Mariana Alcoforado

Mariana Alcoforado, born on April twenty-second, sixteen forty, was a Portuguese nun who resided in the Convent of Our Lady of the Conception in Beja, Portugal. Her life in the convent was marked by a profound literary contribution that has sparked ongoing debate among scholars regarding the true authorship of the celebrated 'Letters of a Portuguese Nun.'

These letters, which consist of five poignant missives, are often attributed to Alcoforado, who is said to have experienced a passionate love affair with Noël Bouton, Marquis de Chamilly, a French officer who later became a Marshal of France. This romantic entanglement has not only made Beja a notable name in literary discussions but has also captured the imagination of readers in both Portugal and France.

Despite the intrigue surrounding her life and letters, some literary experts argue that the letters may be a work of fiction, suggesting that they were penned by Gabriel-Joseph de Lavergne, comte de Guilleragues. Nevertheless, the existence of a real nun named Mariana Alcoforado adds a layer of authenticity to the narrative.

In two thousand six, Myriam Cyr published a book titled 'Letters of a Portuguese Nun: Uncovering the Mystery Behind a Seventeenth-Century Forbidden Love,' which aims to reaffirm the attribution of the letters to Alcoforado herself, thus reigniting interest in her life and works.
