Marianne Brandt

Marianne Brandt, born on October first, eighteen ninety-three, was a multifaceted German artist whose talents spanned painting, sculpture, photography, and industrial design. She began her artistic journey at a private art school and later attended the Grand Ducal College of Art in Weimar from nineteen eleven to nineteen seventeen, where she delved into Expressionism and sculpture.

Brandt's pivotal experience came at the Bauhaus art school in Weimar, where she honed her skills and eventually became the head of the Bauhaus Metall-Werkstatt, or Metal Workshop, in Dessau in nineteen twenty-eight. Her innovative designs for household items, particularly lamps and ashtrays, have earned her a lasting legacy as a pioneer of modern industrial design.

In addition to her work in design, Brandt explored photography at the Bauhaus, capturing striking self-portraits and experimenting with reflections in glass and metal. She served as the head of the design department at Ruppelwerk Metallwarenfabrik GmbH in Gotha until nineteen thirty-two, further solidifying her influence in the field.

After World War II, Brandt continued to shape the future of design as a university teacher at the University of Applied Arts, now known as the Berlin Weißensee School of Art, from nineteen forty-nine to nineteen fifty-four. In nineteen fifty-four, she also oversaw the exhibition titled The German Applied Art of the GDR in Beijing and Shanghai, showcasing her commitment to promoting design on an international stage.
