Marianne Cope

Marianne Cope, born Barbara Koob on January 23, 1838, was a remarkable figure in American healthcare and religious service. A German-born member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse, she dedicated her life to nursing, teaching, and missionary work. Cope's commitment to her vocation was evident when she became the founding director of St. Joseph's Hospital, one of the first general hospitals in the United States, located in Syracuse.

In 1883, Cope took a courageous step by leading a group of six sisters to the Kingdom of Hawaii. Their mission was to care for individuals afflicted with leprosy on the island of Molokaʻi and to assist in the development of the kingdom's medical infrastructure. Her unwavering dedication to her patients was remarkable, as she worked closely with them for many years without contracting the disease herself.

Marianne Cope's legacy extends beyond her lifetime. In recognition of her selfless service and profound impact on the lives of many, she was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in two thousand five and canonized in two thousand twelve. Her life continues to inspire countless individuals in the fields of healthcare and humanitarian work.
