Marianne Faithfull

Marianne Faithfull, born on December 29, 1946, in Hampstead, London, is an iconic English singer and actress who rose to fame in the 1960s. She first captured the public's attention with her UK top 10 single 'As Tears Go By,' becoming a prominent figure in the British Invasion of the United States. Her career took off after being discovered by The Rolling Stones' manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, at a party in 1964.

Faithfull's debut studio album, released in 1965, was a significant success, paving the way for a series of acclaimed albums on Decca Records. During this period, she was also known for her high-profile romantic relationship with Mick Jagger, which lasted from 1966 to 1970. In addition to her music career, Faithfull made her mark in film with notable roles in productions such as 'I'll Never Forget What's'isname' (1967), 'The Girl on a Motorcycle' (1968), and 'Hamlet' (1969).

However, the 1970s brought personal challenges that overshadowed her career, including struggles with anorexia, homelessness, and heroin addiction. Despite these difficulties, Faithfull's distinctive voice, initially celebrated for its melodic quality, evolved into a raspy, lower-pitched sound due to health issues and substance abuse, which some critics described as 'whisky soaked.'

After a lengthy hiatus, Faithfull made a remarkable comeback in 1979 with the release of 'Broken English,' an album that received critical acclaim and commercial success. This work is often regarded as her definitive recording and earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. She continued to release albums throughout the 1980s, including 'Dangerous Acquaintances' (1981) and 'Strange Weather' (1987).

In addition to her music, Faithfull has authored three autobiographical books, sharing her life experiences and insights. Her contributions to the arts have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the World Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2009 Women's World Awards and the title of Commandeur of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2011.
