Mariano Melgarejo

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Mariano Melgarejo

Mariano Melgarejo, born on April thirteenth, eighteen twenty, was a prominent Bolivian military officer and politician who rose to infamy as the fifteenth president of Bolivia. His presidency began on December twenty-eighth, eighteen sixty-four, following a coup d'état against the then-president José María de Achá. This marked the start of a six-year dictatorship, known as the Sexenio, characterized by Melgarejo's controversial leadership and authoritarian rule.

During his time in power, Melgarejo solidified his control through violent means, including the assassination of former president Manuel Isidoro Belzu in eighteen sixty-five. His regime is often remembered for its poor governance and severe abuses against the indigenous population. Additionally, Melgarejo's administration signed detrimental border treaties with Chile and Brazil in eighteen sixty-six and eighteen sixty-seven, which would have lasting negative impacts on Bolivia.

The end of Melgarejo's rule came on January fifteenth, eighteen seventy-one, when General Agustín Morales, the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, led a rebellion against him. Supported by the citizens of La Paz, who had grown weary of Melgarejo's despotic actions, the uprising culminated in a fierce battle that is regarded as one of the most brutal in Bolivian history. The revolt successfully deposed Melgarejo, bringing an end to his regime.

After being ousted, Melgarejo fled to Chile, where he remained for several months. However, upon learning that his lover, Juana Sánchez, was in Lima, Peru, he decided to travel there. Tragically, upon his arrival in Lima on November twenty-third, eighteen seventy-one, Melgarejo was shot and killed by Juana's brother, José Aurelio Sánchez, marking a violent end to the life of a controversial figure in Bolivian history.
