Marie Colvin

Marie Colvin, born on January 12, 1956, was a distinguished American journalist renowned for her courageous reporting as a foreign affairs correspondent for The Sunday Times. Her career spanned from 1985 until her untimely death, during which she became one of the most prominent war correspondents of her generation, recognized for her fearless coverage of conflicts around the world.

On February 22, 2012, while reporting on the siege of Homs, Marie was tragically killed in a targeted attack by Syrian government forces, alongside French photojournalist Rémi Ochlik. Her death marked a significant loss in the field of journalism, highlighting the dangers faced by reporters in war zones.

In honor of her legacy, Stony Brook University established the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting, and her family created the Marie Colvin Memorial Fund to support humanitarian efforts in her name. In July 2016, her family took legal action against the Syrian Arab Republic, claiming evidence of the government's direct involvement in her assassination.

The Columbia District Court ruled in 2019 that the Assad regime was guilty of extrajudicial killing, labeling it an unconscionable crime, and ordered Syria to compensate Colvin's family with three hundred two million dollars. In 2025, the French government issued arrest warrants for Bashar al-Assad and other high-ranking officials, further emphasizing the international ramifications of her tragic death.
