From a young age, Marie demonstrated a natural affinity for swimming, learning the sport at the tender age of five at the Longshore Club in Westport, Connecticut. Her dedication and skill quickly became evident, leading her to compete at high levels.

In nineteen forty-eight, she achieved remarkable success by becoming the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) national champion in the one hundred-yard freestyle, setting a new U.S. record in the process.
