Marie de France

Marie de France, a pioneering poet and writer, is believed to have been born in France around the year eleven hundred and one. She spent much of her life in England during the late twelfth century, where her literary contributions were likely recognized at the royal court of King Henry II. Despite the scarcity of information regarding her personal life, her works have left an indelible mark on the literary landscape.

Writing primarily in Old French, possibly the Anglo-Norman dialect, Marie de France is celebrated as the first known woman to compose francophone verse. Her proficiency extended beyond French; she was also skilled in Latin, Middle English, and potentially Breton, showcasing her broad intellectual capabilities.

Among her most notable works is the collection known as the Lais of Marie de France, which has been widely read and continues to influence the romance and heroic literature genres. Additionally, she translated Aesop's Fables from Middle English into Anglo-Norman French and authored the 'Espurgatoire seint Partiz,' a narrative based on a Latin text. Recently, she has been tentatively identified as the writer of 'The Life of Saint Audrey,' further enriching her literary legacy.
