Marie-Jeanne de Lalande

Marie-Jeanne de Lalande, born in 1768, was a prominent French astronomer and mathematician whose contributions to the field of science were significant, particularly through her collaboration with the esteemed Jérôme Lalande.

Her work in astronomy not only showcased her mathematical prowess but also helped pave the way for future generations of women in science. Marie-Jeanne's reputation as a scientific figure was notably recognized by the renowned mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss.

In 1806, during a military campaign in Prussia, Gauss remarked that he was aware of only one French woman engaged in scientific endeavors, referring to her as Madame Lefrançois de Lalande. This anecdote highlights her unique position in a predominantly male-dominated field.
