Marie Yovanovitch

Marie Yovanovitch, born on November eleventh, nineteen fifty-eight, is a distinguished Canadian-American diplomat and civil servant. With a career spanning several key positions within the United States Foreign Service, she has made significant contributions to U.S. diplomacy.

Yovanovitch's notable roles include serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan from two thousand five to two thousand eight, and to Armenia from two thousand eight to two thousand eleven. She also held the position of Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs between two thousand twelve and two thousand thirteen, and was the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine from two thousand sixteen until her abrupt recall in two thousand nineteen.

During her tenure as Ambassador to Ukraine, Yovanovitch became the target of a politically motivated smear campaign, which was notably amplified by President Donald Trump and his associates. Her removal from the post followed allegations that she was obstructing Trump's efforts to pressure Ukraine into investigating his political rival, Joe Biden.

Following her retirement from the State Department on January thirty-first, two thousand twenty, Yovanovitch has continued to engage in diplomatic education as a diplomat in residence at the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy at Georgetown University.
