Marina Raskova

Marina Raskova, born on March fifteenth, nineteen twelve, was a pioneering figure in aviation and military history. She was the first woman in the Soviet Union to earn a diploma as a professional air navigator, a remarkable achievement that set the stage for her illustrious career.

Initially aspiring to be an opera singer, Raskova's path took a dramatic turn as she transitioned into a military instructor. Her dedication and skill led her to become the Soviet Union's first female navigator, where she played a crucial role in numerous record-setting and record-breaking flights.

Raskova's legacy includes founding and commanding the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment, a women's aviation unit that was later renamed the 125th M.M. Raskova Borisov Guards Dive Bomber Regiment in her honor. Under her leadership, this regiment became a vital part of the Soviet military effort during World War II.

As one of over eight hundred thousand women who served in the military, Raskova was instrumental in establishing three female air regiments. These units collectively flew over thirty thousand sorties and produced at least thirty Heroes of the Soviet Union, showcasing the significant contributions of women in the armed forces.
