Marino Faliero

Marino Faliero, born in the year 1274, emerged from one of Venice's most venerable patrician families. His illustrious career spanned various state roles, including military appointments, governorships, and ambassadorships. Despite his advanced age of eighty at the time of his election, he ascended to the position of the fifty-fifth Doge of Venice on 11 September 1354.

Faliero's tenure as Doge was short-lived, concluding with his execution on 15 April 1355, just two days after his failed coup d'état. The motivations behind his drastic actions remain a topic of debate among historians. While some suggest that his coup was driven by a personal vendetta related to an insult against his younger wife, others argue that he sought to establish a more autocratic rule in response to the changing political landscape beyond Venice.

His legacy is marked by a haunting reminder of his fate; a painting draped in black, inscribed with the words, 'This is the place of Marino Faliero, beheaded for crimes,' hangs in the Great Council Hall of Venice, alongside the portraits of his predecessors. The dramatic events of his life and the coup attempt have inspired numerous artistic interpretations, including plays, paintings, and operas, ensuring that his story endures in the annals of Venetian history.
