Marisol Escobar

Marisol Escobar, known simply as Marisol, was a prominent Venezuelan-American artist born on May 22, 1930, in Paris. She made her mark as a sculptor, painter, designer, and assemblage artist, establishing her creative roots in the vibrant art scene of New York City.

Her rise to fame occurred in the mid-1960s, when her unique artistic vision captivated audiences worldwide. However, by the 1970s, she had slipped into relative obscurity, continuing to create art away from the public eye.

In the early twenty-first century, Marisol experienced a resurgence in recognition, highlighted by a significant retrospective in 2014 at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. This renewed interest culminated in the largest retrospective of her work, organized by the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, featuring her art across several prestigious venues, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Toledo Museum of Art.

Marisol's legacy is preserved through the extensive collection of her artwork and archival materials, which she bequeathed to the Buffalo AKG Art Museum upon her passing on April 30, 2016. Her contributions to the art world continue to inspire and resonate with new generations of artists and art lovers alike.
