Marius Barbeau

Charles Marius Barbeau, born on March 5, 1883, was a pioneering Canadian ethnographer and folklorist whose contributions laid the groundwork for Canadian anthropology. His extensive work in documenting and preserving Québecois folk culture has earned him recognition as a key figure in the field.

Barbeau's academic journey was marked by his status as a Rhodes Scholar, which propelled him into a lifelong exploration of the rich tapestry of cultural narratives. He dedicated much of his career to cataloguing the social structures, musical traditions, and artistic expressions of the Tsimshianic-speaking peoples of British Columbia, including the Tsimshian, Gitxsan, and Nisga'a, as well as other Northwest Coast communities.
