Niculae's football journey began at Dinamo București, where he progressed through the youth ranks to make his first team debut at the tender age of 15 in 1996. Over his time with the club, he made a significant impact, scoring 44 goals in 100 appearances in Divizia A. In 2001, he transitioned to the Primeira Liga, signing with Sporting CP for a reported transfer fee of three million dollars, although the actual amount is believed to be closer to four and a half million dollars.
His tenure in Portugal was marred by injuries, limiting him to 14 goals in 59 league matches before he departed in 2005. Niculae's career continued with stints at Standard Liège, Mainz 05, and Inverness, before returning to Dinamo in July 2008. He captained the team for most of his second spell until moving to Vaslui in July 2012.
Throughout his career, Niculae achieved notable honors, including two league titles—one with Dinamo and another with Sporting—three Romanian Cups, and a Romanian Super Cup. He was also a UEFA Cup runner-up and claimed the Portuguese Supercup. In 2001, he earned the Divizia A Golden Boot by scoring 20 goals and finished as a runner-up for the Romanian Footballer of the Year.
As a physical striker known for his aerial prowess, Niculae made his international debut for Romania in 2000 at just 18 years old. He represented his country at Euro 2008 and captained the national team for the first time in 2012 during a friendly against Turkmenistan, amassing a total of 44 caps and scoring 15 goals for his nation.
