Marius Žaliūkas, born on November tenth, nineteen eighty-three, was a distinguished Lithuanian professional footballer known for his versatility on the pitch. Primarily a centre back, he also showcased his skills as a defensive midfielder throughout his career.
Žaliūkas began his football journey in Lithuania, playing for clubs such as Inkaras, FBK Kaunas, and Šilutė. His career took a significant turn in two thousand six when he joined Hearts in the Scottish Premier League, initially on loan. Over the course of seven years, he made one hundred ninety-three appearances, netting thirteen goals and leading the team as captain to a Scottish Cup victory in two thousand twelve.
After his successful stint at Hearts, Žaliūkas ventured into the English Football League Championship with Leeds United and later joined Rangers in the Scottish Championship. He concluded his playing career in two thousand sixteen, returning to Lithuania to play for Žalgiris.
On the international stage, Žaliūkas represented the Lithuania national team, earning twenty-five caps and scoring once between two thousand five and two thousand sixteen. Tragically, he passed away at the age of thirty-six due to motor neuron disease, leaving behind a legacy in Lithuanian football.
