Mark Begich, born on March 30, 1962, in Anchorage, Alaska, is a prominent American politician and businessperson. He made history as the first U.S. Senator native to Alaska, serving from 2009 to 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, Begich's political journey began early when he was elected to the Anchorage Assembly at the age of twenty-six, eventually becoming its chairman for three years before leaving in 1998.
Before his successful tenure as mayor of Anchorage from 2003 to 2009, Begich faced challenges in his political career, including two unsuccessful campaigns for the mayoral position in 1994 and 2000. His determination paid off when he was elected mayor in 2003 and subsequently reelected in 2006. In the 2008 Senate election, he achieved a significant victory by narrowly defeating the long-serving Republican incumbent, Ted Stevens.
Begich's Senate career was marked by his commitment to representing Alaskan interests, but he faced a tough reelection battle in 2014, ultimately losing to former Alaska Attorney General Dan Sullivan. After completing his term, he transitioned into the private sector by founding the Anchorage-based consulting firm Northern Compass Group.
In June 2018, Begich announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Alaska, competing against Republican nominee Mike Dunleavy. Despite his efforts, he lost the gubernatorial election by a margin of seven percentage points, marking another chapter in his ongoing political journey.
