Mark Tobey

Mark Tobey, born on December eleventh, nineteen hundred in Centerville, Wisconsin, was a prominent American painter and illustrator. His artistic journey led him to develop densely structured compositions that drew inspiration from Asian calligraphy, setting him apart from his contemporaries in the Abstract Expressionism movement. While his work shares similarities with this style, the philosophical motivations behind his creations diverged significantly from those of most Abstract Expressionist artists.

As a founding member of the Northwest School, alongside notable figures such as Guy Anderson, Kenneth Callahan, Morris Graves, and William Cumming, Tobey played a crucial role in shaping the artistic landscape of the region. His seniority and experience allowed him to mentor younger artists, fostering a shared interest in philosophy and Eastern religions that deeply influenced their work. Despite his significant contributions, Tobey was largely self-taught, having begun his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago.

In nineteen twenty-one, he established the art department at The Cornish School in Seattle, Washington, further solidifying his impact on the art community. An avid traveler, Tobey explored diverse cultures across Mexico, Europe, Palestine, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, China, and Japan, which enriched his artistic perspective. His conversion to the Baháʼí Faith became a pivotal aspect of his life, informing his artistic expression.

Throughout his career, Tobey's all-over paintings, characterized by oriental brushwork and calligraphic strokes, sparked discussions about their potential influence on Jackson Pollock's drip paintings, a question that remains open to interpretation. After spending most of his life in the Seattle area, he relocated to Basel, Switzerland, in the early nineteen sixties with his companion, Pehr Hallsten. Mark Tobey passed away in Basel in nineteen seventy-six, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate in the art world.
