Markoosie Patsauq

Markoosie Patsauq, born on May twenty-four, nineteen forty-one, was a distinguished Canadian Inuk writer hailing from Inukjuak, Nunavik, Québec. He is celebrated for his seminal work, Harpoon of the Hunter (ᐊᖑᓇᓱᑦᑎᐅᑉ ᓇᐅᒃᑯᑎᖓ), which holds the distinction of being the first published novel in the Inuktitut language. Although written in nineteen sixty-nine, it was published in nineteen seventy, preceding Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk's Sanaaq.

Patsauq's early life was marked by significant upheaval; his family was among those forcibly relocated to Resolute, Northwest Territories during the High Arctic relocation in nineteen fifty-three. He later pursued his education in Yellowknife, where he developed a passion for storytelling and aviation.

While working as a pilot—the first Inuk pilot in Canada—Patsauq penned the coming-of-age narrative of Harpoon of the Hunter, drawing inspiration from tales shared by his family. The story was serialized in the Inuit periodical Inuttituut before its English translation was published in nineteen seventy. The novel has since been translated into several languages, including Ukrainian in nineteen seventy-four, French in twenty-thirteen, and Hindi and Marathi in twenty-fifteen.

In twenty sixteen, scholar Valerie Henitiuk began exploring the nuances of Patsauq's original Inuktitut text and its subsequent translations. Collaborating with Marc-Antoine Mahieu and Patsauq himself, they produced the first full critical edition of his work in twenty twenty-one, titled Hunter with Harpoon/Chasseur au Harpon. Markoosie Patsauq passed away in March twenty twenty at his home in Inukjuak, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate within the literary community.
