Martianus Capella

Martianus Capella, born in the year three hundred sixty, was a distinguished writer, poet, music theorist, and philosopher hailing from the ancient city of Madaura. He is celebrated as a jurist and polymath of late antiquity, recognized for his significant contributions to the development of the seven liberal arts, which laid the foundation for early medieval education.

His most notable work, De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii, also known as De septem disciplinis, is an intricate encyclopedic piece that combines prose with elaborate and allusive verse. This didactic allegory explores the marriage of Philology and Mercury, showcasing his literary prowess and philosophical insights.

Martianus Capella's philosophical perspectives are often rooted in Neoplatonism, reflecting the influence of the Platonic school established by Plotinus and his followers. His writings frequently take the form of dialogues, allowing for a rich exploration of ideas, although the views expressed by the characters may not necessarily align with his own beliefs.

Despite being a contemporary of Macrobius, who also delved into classical Roman religion, Martianus Capella refrained from explicitly identifying his religious affiliations.
