Martin David Kruskal

Martin David Kruskal, born on September twenty-eighth, nineteen twenty-five, was a distinguished American mathematician and physicist whose work spanned a remarkable range of disciplines. His contributions to mathematics and science were foundational, impacting fields such as plasma physics, general relativity, nonlinear analysis, and asymptotic analysis. Kruskal's academic journey began at the University of Chicago and continued at New York University, where he earned his Ph.D. under the guidance of Richard Courant in nineteen fifty-two. He dedicated a significant portion of his career to Princeton University, starting as a research scientist at the Plasma Physics Laboratory in nineteen fifty-one. He later became a professor of astronomy in nineteen sixty-one, founded and chaired the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics in nineteen sixty-eight, and was appointed professor of mathematics in nineteen seventy-nine.

After retiring from Princeton University in nineteen eighty-nine, Kruskal joined the mathematics department at Rutgers University, where he held the prestigious David Hilbert Chair of Mathematics.
