Mary Beale

Mary Beale, born on March twenty-sixth, sixteen thirty-three, was a pioneering English painter renowned for her exceptional skills in portrait painting. As one of the few female professional artists in London during her time, she carved a niche for herself in a male-dominated field. Beale's artistic career flourished from the early seventies until the late nineties, during which she became the primary financial supporter of her family through her work.

In addition to her painting, Beale was a talented writer. Her prose, 'Discourse on Friendship,' published in sixteen sixty-six, offers a scholarly perspective on the subject, showcasing her unique voice as a woman in the arts. Furthermore, her manuscript 'Observations on the materials and techniques employed in her painting of Apricots,' written in sixteen sixty-three, stands as the earliest known instructional text in English authored by a female painter, although it was never printed.

Beale's contributions to the art world did not go unnoticed. She received early praise from Sir William Sanderson, who recognized her as a virtuous practitioner of oil colors in his book 'Graphice' in sixteen fifty-eight. Her work continued to garner acclaim from notable figures, including court painter Sir Peter Lely, and posthumously, she was acknowledged in 'An Essay towards an English-School,' which highlighted the most distinguished artists of her generation.
