In nineteen sixty-four, Peil achieved significant recognition by winning two prestigious singing competitions: the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. This latter victory secured her a contract with the Metropolitan Opera National Company, where she dazzled audiences as a leading soprano during two seasons of national tours from nineteen sixty-five to nineteen sixty-seven. Her operatic prowess continued into the seventies, highlighted by her creation of the role of Alma in the world premiere of Lee Hoiby's Summer and Smoke at the Minnesota Opera in nineteen seventy-one, a role she later recorded for American television in nineteen eighty-two.

Transitioning into musical theatre, Peil took on the title role in Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate in nineteen eighty-three, followed by a national tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I, where she starred as Anna Leonowens opposite Yul Brynner. Her film credits include notable performances in The Odd Couple II, The Stepford Wives, Flags of Our Fathers, Mirrors, Maladies, and Collateral Beauty.
